WiredKids Summit, October 15, 2002

Russell Senate Building, Room 325, Washington, DC

Keeping Kids Safe Online
Teenangels, teens trained in online safety and security by the FBI, Parry Aftab and leading online safety and law enforcement experts, share the latest developments in online sexual exploitation of children and discuss online safety, child exploitation online, child pornography and online privacy and security. Their younger preteen counterparts discuss cyber crime prevention and safety tips for children and teens. The First Annual Wired Cops Awards will be presented to the FBI, U.S. Customs, the U.S. Secret Service, The U.S. Postal Inspectors, the FTC and The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for their work in policing the Internet and keeping children safe.

Kids Online in Schools
A panel of children and teens will discuss how they use the Internet in schools. The Second Annual Educations SuperStar Awards will be given to the leading educational Web sites. These sites are nominated by educators and librarians, and approved by the students themselves. In addition, The WiredSafety.org WiredAngel of the Year Award will be given to two leading library media specialists in schools.

Just for Fun!
Kids and teens share what they do online, their favorite activities and how much they enjoy the Internet. They are a ready-made focus group for kids and teens online, and present the WiredKids Best of the Web Awards. These awards are given to sites that children and teens nominate. These sites then have to be approved by our parent volunteers, and once approved need to pass the legal scrutiny of Internet privacy lawyers.

Special Awards
In addition, the 9/11 Angels Awards will be presented by WiredKids. Given to the special unsung heroes of September 11th.. The recipients include First Lady Laura Bush and Peggy Conlon for the Ad Council public service campaign to help children and families recover from the pain of September 11th, Officer Chris Christiansen and his wounded WTC search and rescue dog, Servous, and PR Newswire for their generous donation of all September 11th press releases following the attacks. Finally, the Internet Visionary Award will be given to Internet industry members that have changed the face of the Internet, by making it safer and more valuable for children and families.
